Lauding the contribution of Manipuri youth to different sports in the country, Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday said that his government will build a state-of-the-art sports university in Imphal which will not only help train sportsmen but will also provide livelihood opportunities in various allied sectors.

Manipur has produced outstanding sportsmen and it's the government's responsibility to provide necessary support for development of sports in the state, Modi said at the concluding ceremony of Manipur Sangai Festival in Imphal.

He also said that the government will provide any other help to the state to boost the local economy. See pics: Modi attends Manipur Sangai Festival in Imphal

"Manipur and other northeastern states have huge potential for tourism. The tourism industry requires little investment but gets maximum returns. Everyone from tea sellers, taxi drivers to small homestay owners all can earn their livelihood through tourism," the prime minister said.

"The government is also considering to recruit youth from the northeast in Delhi Police. This would not only give them exposure but would also help promote national integration," he said.

Recalling one of his plans to invite women police officers from the northeast to Gujarat to promote cooperation Modi said, "When I was a chief minister I had a plan to bring 200 women police officers from each of the northeastern states on a two-year rotational deputation to Gujarat. That would have been a perfect example of national integration."

In his brief speech, Modi also asked the Manipuri youth to keep away from drugs. "Drugs will not only destroy you but also your family. I feel said when I hear cases of drug addiction among Manipuri youth.

"The Manipuri youth have huge potential to contribute richly to the country. They shouldn't waste their time in drugs,"  Modi said.
